If God has picked a candidate, then the Catholic Church must pick one too so they are going along with God's choice. Apparently, someone forgot to tell the Pope or the Vatican. I follow the Vatican on Twitter and I have not come across a single message on there that Mitt was their guy. So I'm a little unclear on this.
I was taught that the Catholic Church and those who follow Christ were interested in saving souls. Spread the good news. You can go to heaven. Christ died for your sins. These things I believe.
Did I miss the part where Christ said to pick a political candidate? When Canada elected Stephen Harper, did God pick him too? What about François Hollande? He's the president of France. Was there a God endorsement there too?
I know I'm oozing sarcasm here. But the point should be obvious. God does not endorse candidates. God does not endorse the mayor of your city or anyone on your school board. God does not endorse your gardener or your dentist. These things are entirely your choice.
Now Catholics, hear this. I'm not aware of the Church endorsing a candidate. If this were the case, I would be quite disappointed. The Church should be assisting people to connect with God and be the conscience of the people. And there is an abundance of issues to address. Getting wrapped up in candidates is a perversion of the mission of the Church.
Remember when the person asked Christ if he should pay taxes and Christ said "render onto Cesar that which is Cesar's". One can read much into this. The larger message I take away from this is that in a spiritual sense, we should not be so concerned with such things. Paying attention to things like that is a distraction from where the focus should be. Reach out to others. Be humble. Be merciful. ask for forgiveness.
It is my hope that my fellow country men will consider who would be best to lead this country through the trials that are ever present. I pick Barack Obama. You get to make your own choice.
